“ฝ่าบาท มีข่าวลือว่าระหว่างที่เรากำลังเตรียมการแก้แค้นพระบิดา ฝ่าบาทกลับหาความสุขกับหญิงเต้นรำ เรื่องนี้หากเป็นความจริง เราจะไปพบบรรพชนได้อย่างไร” ขุนนางผู้หนึ่งคาดคั้นกษัตริย์
กษัตริย์ปฏิเสธข่าวนั้น แต่ผู้คนก็ยังพูดเรื่องนี้อยู่

ในที่สุด Yungamo โดนขุนนางจับตัวไปสอบสวนบังคับให้รับความจริงว่าได้ค้างคืนกับกษัตริย์จริงๆ เธอได้แต่สั่นหัวไม่อาจพูดความจริงออกมาได้ ทหารคนหนึ่งออกมาคุกเข่าและว่าเขาหลงรัก Yungamo มานานแล้วแต่เธอไม่รับรัก และสมยอมว่าเขาเป็นคนที่เข้าไปหาเธอในคืนนั้น องครักษ์ได้โอกาสจึงแทงทหารผู้นั้นตาย ก่อนที่จะหันไปแทง Yungamo ก็โดนห้ามไว้ก่อน เธอจึงรอดตาย แต่ถูกลงโทษไปทำงานหนักในครัว

ต่อมา Yungamo ออกเดินทางตามหา Mokrasu ที่ Ajagoori Mokrasu บอกเธอว่าเขาต้องการทิ้งทุกอย่างเพื่ออยู่กับเธอ Yungamo โกรธว่า Mokrasu อ่อนแอและว่าเธอไม่ต้องการแต่งงานกับเขาแล้ว

3 เดือนต่อมา Mokrasu นำเสนองานประดิษฐ์แก่โอรสองค์โตของกษัตริย์และได้รับคำชมเชย เขามาตามหาYungamo จึงรู้ว่าเธอถูกลงโทษทำงานครัว

Yungamo บอกกับองครักษ์ว่าเธอตั้งท้อง องครักษ์ตกใจมากและกำชับให้เธอเก็บเรื่องนี้เป็นความลับ องครักษ์สั่งลูกน้องให้ไปหา Yungamo แสดงตัวว่าเป็นสามีของเธอ ทำทีว่าจะพาเธอหนี และให้จัดการฆ่าปิดปากเธอเสีย

ด้าน Mokrasu พยายามมาขอคืนดีกับ Yungamo แต่เธอไม่ยอม และว่าเธอรอเขาไม่ไหวและแต่งงานกับคนอื่นไปแล้ว ตกกลางคืนทหารที่รับเป็นสามี Yungamo พาเธอหนีและหลอกให้เธอกินอาหารที่มียาพิษ Mokrasu บุกเข้ามาพอดีและช่วยเธอออกมา Mokrasu ขอร้องให้เธอแต่งงานกับเขา

Yungamo มาเข้าเฝ้ากษัตริย์เพื่อบอกว่าเธอตั้งท้อง เธอเล่าให้กษัตริย์ฟังว่ามีคนพยายามฆ่าเธอ และเธอต้องการรู้ว่ากษัตริย์เป็นคนสั่งการใช่หรือไม่ กษัตริย์ได้มอบสร้อยให้กับเธอ และว่าสร้อยนี้จะแสดงสถานะลูกว่าเป็นเจ้าชายของ Baekjae ให้รับไว้และหนีไปเสีย สร้อยนี้อาจเป็นดาบสองคมกับเธอและลูก แต่ขอให้หนีไปก่อน กษัตริย์ได้กล่าวขอโทษ Yungamo ว่าตนเองและราชวงศ์อ่อนแอเกินไป ไม่สามารถปกป้องเธอและลูกได้

ตอน 2
กษัตริย์ได้มอบสร้อยสัญลักษณ์ของเจ้าชายแก่ Yungamo และสั่งให้เธอมอบแก่ลูกหากเป็นลูกชาย หากเป็นลูกสาวให้ฝังสร้อยทิ้งเสียไม่ให้ใครเห็น พร้อมทั้งกล่าวขอโทษนางที่พระองค์ไม่สามารถปกป้องนางและลูกได้

ด้าน Mokrasu ออกตามหา Yungamo แต่นางออกเดินทางจากไปแล้ว Mokrasu จึงได้แต่เข้าร่วมพระราชพิธีแต่งตั้งเขาเป็นนักประดิษฐ์อาวุโส

12 ปีต่อมา
เด็กๆ 2-3 คน กำลังซ่อนตัวในพงหญ้า เด็กน้อยจางโผล่ออกมา เรียกเสียงฮือฮาให้กับเด็กๆ ในกลุ่ม จางกล่าวว่า “แน่อยู่แล้ว ข้าต้องทำได้ พวกเจ้านึกว่าข้าเป็นใคร ถึงข้าจะไม่มีพ่อ แต่ข้าคือจาง ลูกมังกร” ที่แท้จางและเด็กๆ เข้ามาขโมยเครื่องประดับตามคำสั่งของนักเลงหัวไม้ 2 คน แต่แล้วกลับโดนนักเลงตลบหลังไม่ยอมแบ่งส่วนแบ่งให้ กลับซ้อมเด็กๆ และสั่งให้ไปขโมยบ้านอื่นอีก นักเลงขู่จางว่าถ้าไม่ทำจะแจ้งตำรวจว่าจางและแม่ใช้ป้ายประจำตัวปลอม และยังกล่าวดูถูกจางว่าไม่มีพ่อ ก่อนที่นักเลงจะลงมือกับจางอีก แม่ของเขาคือ Yungamo ก็ปรากฏตัวขึ้นพร้อมร้องห้าม

เมื่อกลับบ้านจางโดนแม่ลงโทษโดยตีด้วยไม้เรียว จางได้แต่ถามแม่ว่า “ แม่...แม่เป็นนักโทษหนีคดีหรืออย่างไร หรือแม่เป็นชาว Silla ทำไมเราต้องหนีหัวซุกหัวซุนตลอดเวลา เราต้องโดนรังแกจากนักเลงตลอดเวลาเพราะใช้ป้ายประจำตัวปลอม แม่บอกข้าเถิด แม่เป็นฆาตกรหรือ”
“ไม่ใช่หรอกลูก”
“ถ้าเช่นนั้น พ่อข้าเป็นฆาตกรใช่มั้ย”
“เจ้ากล้าดีอย่างไรจึงพูดเช่นนั้น”
”ถ้างั้นเป็นอย่างไรแน่ แม่ไม่เคยบอกข้าเรื่องพ่อเลย คอยแต่หลอกข้าว่าข้าเป็นลูกมังกร แล้วก็หนีไปวันๆ”
“แม่ทำเช่นนี้เพื่อปกป้องลูกนะจาง”
“ไม่ ข้าไม่ต้องการ ข้าจะหาเงิน และไปที่ Chunchooku เมื่อถึงที่นั้นเราจะไม่ต้องเร่ร่อนอีกต่อไป ข้าจะทำในสิ่งที่ข้าต้องการ”

จางวิ่งออกนอกบ้าน เขาวางแผนกับเพื่อนๆ ไปแก้แค้นนักเลงโดยยิงลูกไฟเข้าใส่จนเกิดระเบิดควันขึ้น เด็กๆโดนไล่จับโดยตำรวจ พร้อมทั้ง Yungamo และนักเลงทั้งสอง Yungamo ร้องขอว่าทั้งหมดเป็นความผิดของนางที่สั่งสอนลูกไม่ดี ขอให้ลงโทษนางคนเดียว นางโดนเฆี่ยนเป็นการลงโทษ

เมื่อกลับบ้านจางมาทำแผลให้แม่ Yungamo ตัดสินใจส่งจางไป Daehaksa (สถาบันวิทยาการของ Baekjae) ในเมืองโดซอง นางบอกลูกชายว่าที่นั้นเป็นโรงเรียนที่ดี แม่ก็เติบโตมาในสถานที่นั้น ที่ Daehaksa มีโรงงานผลิตอาวุธและสิ่งของที่ส่งให้ราชสำนัก ฝ่ายหญิงก็เรียนร้องรำทำเพลงเพื่อแสดงต่อหน้าพระพักตร์องค์กษัตริย์ นางบอกจางว่าเขาจะได้เรียนรู้วิทยาการหลากหลายอย่าง

นางมาส่งจางที่หน้า Daehaksa พร้อมทั้งมอบจดหมายฝากให้ Mokrasu นางบอกลูกว่า Mokrasu เป็นคนดีและเขาจะสอนสิ่งต่างๆ ให้แก่จาง จางเข้าใจผิดคิดว่า Mokrasu เป็นพ่อของเขา แต่จางก็ต้องฝันสลายเมื่อเขาได้พบ Mokrasu เขาช่างเข้มงวดและคาดคั้นจางว่าเขารู้หลักคำสอนของขงจื้อหรือไม่ รู้วิธีตีเหล็กหรือไม่ รู้หนังสือหรือไม่ เมื่อจางตอบว่าเขาเพียงอ่านออกเขียนได้เล็กน้อย Mokrasu ก็ขึ้นเสียงว่า “เจ้ากลับไปบอกแม่เจ้าว่าที่นี่เป็นสถาบันอันทรงเกียรติ มิใช่ผู้ใดก็สามารถเดินเข้ามาได้โดยง่าย เรามีหน้าที่พัฒนาวิทยาการและศิลปะของชาติ Baekjae คนที่จะมาที่แห่งนี้ต้องมีความสามารถพิเศษหรือมีแววในทางใดทางหนึ่ง นอกจากนี้ยังต้องมีวินัย ข้ามองไม่เห็นแววในตัวเจ้าเลย และยิ่งรู้จักนิสัยแม่ของเจ้า ข้าก็มั่นใจว่าเจ้าคงไม่มีวินัยเช่นกัน ดังนั้นข้าคงรับเจ้าไว้ไม่ได้” Mokrasu สั่งให้ผู้ช่วยของเขาไล่จางออกไป

ทางด้านกษัตริย์ Baekjae ประกาศว่าจะมีการตั้งรัชทายาทในเร็ววัน โดยจะแต่งตั้งน้องชายของกษัตริย์เป็นรัชทายาทคนใหม่

Mokrasu ยังครุ่นคิดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจดหมายจาก Yungamo อยู่ “เวลาผ่านมา...กว่า 10 ปีแล้วที่ข้าจากท่านมาโดยไม่มีคำอธิบายใดๆ และครั้งนี้ข้าก็กลับมาหาท่านอีกโดยไม่สามารถอธิบายอะไรได้เช่นกัน ข้ารู้ข้าไม่ควรขอร้องท่าน แต่ท่านได้โปรดรับเด็กคนนี้ไว้เถิด ดูแลเขา ให้เขาได้ศึกษาวิชาการ หากท่านยังมีเยื่อใยต่ออดีตของเรา โปรดรับฟังคำขอร้องของข้า บางสิ่งบางอย่างข้าไม่สามารถอธิบายได้ บางอย่างข้าไม่อาจเอื้อนเอ่ยได้”

Mokrasu นั่งจุดตะเกียงและพึมพำคำทำนายที่จารึกไว้ว่า “ผู้ที่กอปรด้วยปัญญา จะส่องประกายเจิดจ้า ผู้ที่จุดตะเกียงดวงนี้จะเป็นกษัตริย์ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ที่จะนำพาความรุ่งเรืองมาสู่ Baekjae”

ผู้คนพากันมาหา Mokrasu เพื่อให้เขาหยุดยั้งพิธีการแต่งตั้งรัชทายาทใหม่ โดยว่าหากพระอนุชาเป็นรัชทายาทจะต้องเกิดการนองเลือดเป็นแน่ Mokrasu ปฏิเสธโดยว่าเขาเป็นข้าราชการฝ่ายวิชาการ ไม่ควรยุ่งกับการเมือง

ทางด้าน Sun หลานของกษัตริย์ สอบถามจากลูกน้องด้วยความสงสัยว่ารัชทายาทได้สิ้นพระชนม์จริงหรือไม่ เนื่องจากยังค้นศพไม่พบ Sun เกรงว่าหากรัชทายาทยังมีชีวิตอยู่ จะเป็นอุปสรรคต่อการขึ้นเป็นรัชทายาทใหม่ของพ่อตน (พระอนุชา) Sun จึงสั่งให้ลูกน้องออกตามหารัชทายาทและปลงพระชนม์เสีย

ในเมืองมีการตรวจค้นอย่างละเอียด จางเข้าไปหลบในรถลากคันหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีชายบาดเจ็บผู้หนึ่งซ่อนอยู่แล้ว ทหารพยายามเข้าตรวจค้น ทำให้คนขับห้อรถหนีจนรถพลิกคว่ำ จางพยายามช่วยชายบาดเจ็บผู้นั้น แต่เขากลับฝากจดหมายสำคัญให้จาง ว่าให้จางนำไปให้ราชองครักษ์ บอกว่าเป็นสาส์นจากรัชทายาท และว่าหากจางนำสาส์นนี้ไปมอบให้ราชองครักษ์ได้ ก็จะสามารถขออะไรก็ได้เป็นการตอบแทน

จางส่งเด็กชายคนหนึ่งเข้าไปหาราชองครักษ์ โดยสอนให้ท่องข้อความซ้ำๆ ว่าข้ามีจดหมายสำคัญที่รับมอบจากชายที่ตายไปแล้วฉบับหนึ่ง มาพบข้าที่ป่าคืนนี้ อย่าคิดจับข้า มิฉะนั้นจะไม่ได้เห็นจดหมายเลย” ราชองครักษ์และพวกสงสัยว่ารัชทายาทยังมีชีวิตอยู่ เขาออกไปพบจางตามนัด จางต่อรองกับราชองครักษ์ว่าเขาต้องการพบ Mokrasu เป็นการแลกกับจดหมาย จางต้องการให้ Mokrasu มาคุกเข่าขอโทษตน ราชองครักษ์ตกลงกับจาง แต่ก่อนที่จางจะส่งมอบจดหมายให้ กลับโดนธนูยิงบาดเจ็บจากกลุ่มที่ซุ่มฟังอยู่ จางวิ่งหนีไป

ราชองครักษ์รุดไปพบ Mokrasu เพื่อบอกเกี่ยวกับจาง เขาเชื่อว่าจางจะต้องพยายามมาหา Mokrasu อีกแน่นอน และว่าหากจางมาให้เอาจดหมายไว้เพราะเป็นจดหมายจากรัชทายาท โดยผู้ส่งสาส์นได้โดนลอบฆ่าโดยศัตรูไปแล้ว

Mokrasu สอบถามจากผู้ช่วยว่ามีผู้ใดรู้ที่พักของ Yungamo บ้าง ด้านลูกศิษย์ Mokrasu กำลังแตกตื่นเข้ามาแจ้งว่ามีอาเพทเกิดขึ้น เพราะน้ำในบ่อและไหเก็บน้ำล้วนเต็มไปด้วยฝุ่น ถ่านจุดไฟก็หายไป ผู้คนล้วนตื่นตระหนกว่าเป็นการกระทำของฝ่าย Silla หรือสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์กันแน่ Mokrasu ต้องตักเตือนให้ทุกคนสงบ และส่งคนไปตรวจสอบเรื่องที่เกิดขึ้น จากนั้นพบว่าชามโลหะล้วนมีรอยรมควันจนดำไปหมด และชามดินก็แตกร้าว Mokrasu คิดได้ว่าเป้นการกระทำต่อธาตุทั้ง 5 คือโลหะ ไม้ น้ำ ไฟ ดิน ถ้าเช่นนั้นยังขาดอีก 2 สิ่ง เขาพบว่ามีเด็กกำลังเอาไม้ปักลงที่พื้นทราย จึงสอบถามพบว่าจางเป็นคนสั่งให้เด็กทำ
Mokrasu เดินตามหาจาง จนไปติดกับดักที่จางทำไว้
“ข้าอาจจะตีเหล็กไม่เป็น ไม่มีพรสวรรค์ ไม่มีแวว แต่ข้ารู้จักธาตุทั้ง 5 ท่านคิดว่าไง ตอนนี้ข้าเหมาะสมจะเข้าศึกษาในสถาบันท่านหรือไม่”
Mokrasu ว่า “ข้ารู้แล้วว่าเจ้ามีความสามารถ ความสามารถก่อความวุ่นวาย หากคำพูดข้าทำให้เจ้าเจ็บใจ ข้าก็ขอโทษแล้วกัน ส่งจดหมายมาเถิด มันสำคัญเกินกว่าที่เจ้าคิดยิ่งนัก อนาคตของชาติขึ้นอยู่กับจดหมายนี้”
จางโยนจดหมายใส่ Mokrasu “อยากเอาก็เอาไป แต่ตอนนี้ท่านต้องเขียนจดหมายให้ข้า เขียนจดหมายถึงแม่ข้า แม่ข้าร้องไห้คิดถึงท่านมาตลอด แม่ว่าท่านหวังว่าท่านจะยอมรับในตัวข้า หากแม่รู้ว่าท่านทำกับข้าเช่นนี้ แม่ต้องเสียใจเป็นแน่ ข้าจะบอกแม่ว่าข้าหนีจากที่นี้กลับบ้านเอง แต่ท่านต้องเขียนจดหมายว่าท่านคิดถึงแม่ข้า”

ระหว่างนั้นคนของ Mokrasu ตามมาพบและช่วยเขาไว้ Mokrasu สั่งให้เอาตัวจางกลับไปที่สถาบัน Mokrasu มอบจดหมายที่เขาเขียนให้จาง ส่วนตัวเขาออกเดินทางจะไปพบราชองครักษ์ แต่ระหว่างทางกลับโดนจับตัวไว้

กษัตริย์กำลังประกอบพิธีแต่งตั้งพระอนุชาเป็นรัชทายาท แต่กลับเกิดเหตุอาเพท มีพายุรุนแรงระหว่างพิธี

จางอยู่ในห้องของ Mokrasu เขาเห็นตะเกียงวางอยู่ จึงเข้าไปอุ้มขึ้นด้วย 2 มือและวางลง แต่แล้วตะเกียงกลับจุดขึ้นเอง โดยควันเริ่มพวยพุ่งออกมา

ตอน 3
จางออกมาจากห้อง Mokrasu เดินมาในชายป่าลอบได้ยินทหารที่เตรียมการบุกสำนัก Daehaksa ประชุมกัน จางรีบมาบอก Mokrasu ให้รีบหนี ทหารเหล่านั้นถูกสั่งการโดย Buyeosun (หลานกษัตริย์ที่คิดล้มล้างบัลลังก์) เนื่องจากสำนัก Daehaksa เป็นพวกเดียวกับรัชทายาท ในที่สุดทหารบุกเข้ามาใน สำนัก Daehaksa Mokrasu พาอพยพพาผู้คนหนีทหารอย่างฉุกละหุก ระหว่างโดนไล่ล่า Mokrasu ล้มลงและตกลงในเนินเขา เมื่อฟื้นขึ้น เขาได้พบกับ Yungamo ซึ่งจากกันเป็นเวลานับ 10 ปี แต่ทั้งสองกลับอับจนในคำพูดไม่อาจเอื้อนเอ่ยอะไรออกมาได้ Yungamo ได้มอบจี้ประจำตัวของเธอซึ่งแสดงฐานะว่าเป็นคนของสำนัก Daehaksa ให้กับจาง รวมทั้งสร้อยแสดงฐานะเจ้าชายที่กษัตริย์เคยมอบไว้ และสอนจางว่าต้องเป็นคนดีแต่ไม่ได้บอกฐานะอันแท้จริงแก่จาง จางออกเดินทางไปกับกลุ่มคนของสำนัก เพื่อหลบหนีไปยังแคว้น Silla ทาง Yungamo แต่แรกคิดตัดใจไม่ร่วมเดินทาง แต่แล้วพบว่าตนยังรัก Mokrasu อยู่ไม่เสื่อมคลาย จึงออกวิ่งตามไป แต่โชคร้ายโดนกลุ่มทหารที่ลอบตามมาและโดนธนูยิงเสียชิวิต ทั้งจางและ Mokrasu ต้องมอง Yungamo ล้มลงตายโดยช่วยอะไรไม่ได้เนื่องจากเรือได้ออกจากท่าไปแล้ว

เมื่อแฝงตัวมาอยู่ในแคว้น Silla จางยังคงเป็นเด็กซุกซนเช่นเดิม เขาพลาดพลั้งโดนจับไปพร้อมกับนักโทษหนีคดีคนหนึ่ง ทางสำนักจะช่วยจางจึงนำพระพุทธรูปทองมาติดสินบนเจ้าหน้าที่ Kim Sa Heum (เป็นเจ้าหน้าที่บ้านเมืองฝ่าย Silla) เห็นฝีมือแกะสลักอันละเอียดอ่อนของพระพุทธรูป ก็พยายามสอบถามที่มาและสาวถึง Maekdosu (คนของ Daehaksa ที่มาช่วยจางตอนโดนจับ) และ Mokrasu

ตอน 4
Mokrasu ใช้ปัญญาและฝีมือการช่างทำให้ ชาวสำนักรอดพ้นจากวิกฤตได้ เขาทำกระจกทองแดงฝีมือละเอียดมอบให้ Kim Sa Huem Kim Sa Huem ประทับใจในฝีมือของ Mokrasu จึงตกลงมอบตราประจำตัวชาว Silla ให้คนในสำนักทั้งหมด และยังส่งงานจากราชสำนัก Silla ให้ Mokrasu ด้วย โดยไม่รู้ว่า Mokrasu และพวกเป็นคนของสำนัก Daehaksa

จางซุกซนซ่อนตัวไปในตู้ที่จะนำเข้าไปส่งในราชสำนัก ที่นั้นเขาได้แอบเห็นเจ้าหญิงซันวาซ้อมการร่ายรำอยู่ ในที่สุดเจ้าหญิงจับได้ว่าจางแอบดูจึงเข้ามาจูบจางเป็นการกลั่นแกล้ง จางตกหลุมรักเจ้าหญิงทันที เขากลับมาที่สำนักด้วยอาการเมารัก จางได้รับคำแนะนำจากรุ่นพี่ในสำนักชื่อ Bumsaeng ซึ่งสอนให้เขาทำขี้ผึ้งทาปากให้นำไปให้เจ้าหญิง จางรู้สึกนับถือ Bumsaeng มาก จางหาโอกาสเข้าวังไปหาซันวาแต่เขากลับโดนเธอแกล้งอีกโดยให้ทหารองรักษ์จับจางมาตีก้น
ที่ลอบเข้ามาในวัง จางอับอายมาก เขาแต่งเพลงขึ้นมาหวังจะแกล้งซันวากลับ โดยเนื้อเพลงมีข้อความต่อว่าเจ้าหญิงซันวา แต่แล้วก่อนที่จะทำตามแผนจางก็มาพบเจ้าหญิงเสียก่อน เจ้าหญิงเรียกจางว่า ซอดอง (แปลว่าเด็กขายเผือกมัน) ทั้งสองเริ่มสนิทสนมกัน จางสัญญาว่าจะเป็นคนดีตามที่ให้สัญญากับแม่ไว้ จางได้มอบจี้ประจำตัวสำนัก Daehaksa ของแม่ให้แก่เจ้าหญิง

สายลับของ Silla ที่แฝงตัวอยู่ในสำนัก Daehaksa ชื่อ Jungjak ลอบมาพบ Kim Sa Heum เพื่อบอกที่อยู่ของคน Daehaksa
Mokrasu แอบเห็นพอดี จึงรู้ว่า Jungjak เป็นสายลับ เขาต่อสู้และฆ่า Jungjak ตาย
ทางด้าน Kim Sa Huem พบศพ Jungjak เขาสังเกตเห็นจี้ประจำตัวของ Jungjak เหมือนกับของที่อยู่บนตัวจาง จึงคาดว่าจางต้องมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้อง Daehaksa จึงสั่งให้ทหารสะกดรอยตามจาง

EPISODE 1: Summary

(Since this is a period drama & they use different accent plus there are many names, I may be making some mistakes, but the following is what I gathered so far. Any Korean experts out there, feel free to correct me!)

SPOILER ALERT!!!

This drama begins more than 1000 (?) years ago, during the time when Korea was made up of 3 Kingdoms. The Kingdom of Shilla and Baekjae went to war together against another nation, but Shilla betrays Baekjae and captures the King during combat. There, the King of Baekjae is executed, his head being cut off by one of Shilla slaves.

This is the reason Shilla slave bows down to the enemy's King, asking him permission to be killed, so that his own name may be written down in history. This is a shame, for a king to be betrayed and killed by a mere slave. So the King of Baekjae tells his subordinates to get revenge before he dies.


26 years later

General Sun, the present king's nephew, is spying the territory of Shilla, planning to recover the body of his grand-father. The District Lords of Baekjae are talking about this, saying that it's a shame nothing has been done till now. King Weeduk (the dead king's eldest son) and all the ministers were preparing the former King's MEMORIAL SERVICE, hoping to hear good news from General Sun, and waiting for their national pride to be restored.

Yungamo is dancing while Mokrasu is spying on her, smiling.


Later, Yungamo goes to find Mokrasu, calling him. They go outside and they whisper to each other.

Mok: How can you come like this? What if someone sees you?

Yun: Didn't you do the same thing? Who was the one spying on me while I was dancing?

Mok: You saw me?

Yun: Our mistress saw you too. That's why I got in trouble...

Mok: Really? Oh no, it's my fault!

Yun: Actually, they're selecting people to dance during King Sunghwang's Memorial Service. So I'm very nervous.

Mok: Don't be nervous. I tried to find anyone who dances as gracefully as you, and I couldn't!

Yun: Really?

Mok: I've news too.

Yun: What is it?

Mok: Tomorrow, I'm leaving to Ajagoori on an important mission.

Yun: What for?

Mok: Nothing's certain for now. I'll tell you later.

Soon after, the lovers are caught by their superiors. Yungamo is being punished with a rod, but her mistress softens up, telling her she must dance the day after, during the MEMORIAL SERVICE, so she'll need to get herself in shape.

General Sun is battling the enemy while the king is waiting anxiously. Mokrasu was looking at the sky when he suddenly felt called by a sixth sense. He walks towards the dark forest and digs a box from the earth. He finds an incense burner inside a box. In the cover of the box, there is a carved inscription.

The shamed king will give birth to sadness; sadness will give birth to a child of mistake. However, the one born out of mistake will light up the incense, and the one who lights up this incense will become the King. The King will establish Baekjae again, and receive great honor and praise!

Mok: (Out loud.) "...the one born out of mistake will light up the incense, and the one who lights up this incense... will become the King."

King Weeduk is walking outside, followed by his court members. He sees Yungamo dancing in the night, practicing for the following day. The king goes to Yungamo and embraces her, taking her with him. His personal guard, Wangoo Moojang, is upset... Behind them, someone's watching.

Next day, General Sun brings the head of their former king. King Weeduk praises his nephew for recovering the honor of his father. But then Haedoju, one of the most powerful nobles, speaks up:

"Your Majesty! Is it true that you've spent the night with a court dancer the day before King Sunghwang's Memorial Day? I've heard such rumors... If that were the case, you'd bring more shame indeed..."

The king denies the accusation, saying that he only took a walk outside. But the people continue talking, wondering if the king can do such a dishonorable thing on such a day... Then the nobles bring Yungamo up to interrogate her.



Yungamo: I抦 Yungamo. I was behind the Court Palace practicing dancing for the Memorial Service.



Haedoju: Did you only practice?



Chilryo: Whatever you say can have irreversible consequences! So answer carefully!



Haedoju: By Heavens! Why aren抰 you talking? Someone saw you yesterday with His Majesty!

A witness comes forth, claiming that he saw her with the king. So they tell her that the only way she can live is by telling the truth. They ask her: "Is this true?!"


Yungamo keeps on shaking, unable to speak...

One of the soldiers kneels down, saying that he loved Yungamo for a long time but that she didn't reciprocate his feelings for her. Then, he says that he was the one that went to her the night before... although he didn't go all the way...

Then they ask her again: "Is this true?" After much hesitation, she responds that the man is saying the truth, and that she did spend the night with that man. At once, Wangoo Moojang takes out his sword, killing 'the man.' He was about to kill the woman also, but Haedoju stops him from doing this. After she is set free, she returns to her court. There, her mistress tells her she is no longer allowed to dance. Yungamo must do the cleaning & cooking instead, as a punishment for her shameful action.

Later, she goes looking for Mokrasu all the way to Ajagoori. There, Mokrasu tells her he has missed her so much he was about to quit everything, even his dreams of becoming a scientist for her. "Should we run away? My master gives me so much work I can't see you at all! I think I should quit my dreams of becoming a scientist since I can't concentrate!" Yungamo reprimands him saying that he is a softy, and that she doesn't like weaklings like him. He follows behind her, smiling, but she tells him in tears that she won't marry him if he continues following her.

3 moths later, Mokrasu presents his invention to Prince Aja, the King's eldest son. The prince commends Mokrasu. Mok goes looking for Yungamo and he is told that she must be in the kitchen.

Yungamo tells the king's guard that she is pregnant with the king's child. Wangoo is very alarmed. He tells her he will send someone to protect her so that she should wait for his instructions. "Keep yourself healthy and don't tell this to anyone. If you tell anyone, you'll die!"

Wangoo sends someone to go to Yungamo and act as her husband. "Then, very quietly, get rid off her. We're in a very tight situation now. No one should find this out!"

Mokrasu wants to play with Yungamo, but she isn't playing along with him.

Yungamo: I'm sorry... I can't keep my promise to marry you.

Mokrasu: What are you saying?

Yunga,p: I can't marry you...

Mokrasi: What are you talking about? Stop playing with me...

Yungamo: I couldn't wait for you... so I married someone else.

Yungamo is folding her clothes, getting herself ready to travel. Mokrasu cannot believe what he had just heard.



Later...

Yungamo: I was hoping to leave before you came, but you came already. While you were away, I started loving this man. I'm leaving to another town with him, and we'll live together.

Mokrasu: Why?

Yungamo: One day, I started to forget you... I started to love someone else...

At night, the fake husband takes her inside an inn, and he secretly signals to the housekeeper... Inside the room, he urges Yungamo to eat. She tells him she has no appetite. But the man tells her she must eat for the baby's sake, and that she must do as he tells her since he was sent to protect her. She was about to eat... when Mokrasu breaks into the room, beating up the man. He starts screaming; saying that this man must have raped her; that the woman was his and that she would have never betrayed him... When Yungamo sees the stained spoon, she realizes the food was poisoned, and she runs outside... scared.

Mokrasu follows her...

Yungamo: I must leave...

Mokrasu: You can't go like this, not like this! Why? No, how could you ever betray me? Tell me... You promised me you'd marry me. How could you do this? Please make me understand why! There must be some other reason... Right? Give me any reason... Just tell me your feelings for me were real... That without me... you wouldn't feel any joy, or sadness, or happiness... that those words were honest. Just tell me that. That's all I'm asking.



Then, I won't ask any more questions. I won't ask what happened to you... what you're going through... (Yun embraces him, breaking down) You were honest, right? Your feelings for me...

King Weeduk walks inside his room, when Yungamo comes up to him, bowing down. The King and his guard are startled...

Yungamo: I'm Yungamo, former Court Dancer... After that night, I'm expecting the king's child...

King: (To Wangoo.) Get out, don't make me repeat myself!

The king gives Yungamo a necklace for the child, an emblem for kings. "Give this to him if it¡¯s a boy. This will be the only way to prove he¡¯s a king¡¯s son. Otherwise, bury this away. I¡¯m sorry this is the only thing I can do for you¡¦¡±

Mokrasu looks for Yungamo but she has already left. He goes to a ceremony where the king gives him the title of Honorific-Scientist. The king points the 7-edged sword towards the sky. As it glows, the sword points down at Mokrasu. Mok touches the tip of the sword with his hand, saying:

¡°We will give wisdom to the world, oh Heavens.
We will give expertise to the world, oh Earth.
We will expand the arts to the world, oh Sea.
The wisdom, expertise, and the arts are all centered in the hands of man.
This is our motto and our philosophy to the world.¡±

The king: ¡°The Heavens, the Earth, and the Sea in which I reign,
are centered in the hands of man.
This is for the betterment of humanity,
With all the expertise that you shall teach,
Know that the heart of Baekjae is with you.
The following kings after me will know this too,
Bring unity to our Baekjae people,
And do not forget where your power comes from.
This I declare before everyone.¡±

Mok: ¡°I, Mokrasu, will serve the king wholeheartedly.
I will serve you as my god.
Whatever I create, I shall do it for you.
Wherever I am, I will think of you.

12 Years Later

Children are hiding behind the bushes, waiting¡¦

Kid1: Are you sure he¡¯s in? How can he go in there?
Kid2: If he said he¡¯d do it, he does it.
Kid3: Remember the time he made the dragon fire¡¦? I¡¯d say he¡¯s in¡¦

(Jang comes out) The kids are like ¡°Wow, he made it! Awesome!¡±

Jang: Of course I did it, didn¡¯t I tell you? Who do you think I am? I may be fatherless, but I am Jang, the son of the dragon.¡±

Jang has just stolen jewels for a mob-boss. The mob-boss tells Jang and his friends that they will now be allowed to sell.

Jang asks for a 10% of the profit. Instead, he gets beat up. The boss' right-hand tells Jang:

¡°Now, go and steal this other house, understand? I think you¡¯re forgetting something here¡¦ We made the false identity plaque for you and your mother. If we open our mouth, you¡¯re both dead! That¡¯s why you should listen to us whenever we tell you something. Don¡¯t you know what kind of people carries false ID? Runaway slaves, thieves or murderers¡¦ Seeing that you don¡¯t have a father, your mother might as well be a prostitute.¡±

He tries to hit Jang again but Yungamo intervenes in a commanding voice: ¡°Do not touch a hair of him!¡±

Thief: Like mother like son. How dare you raise your voice in here! Anyway, teach your son to listen! Otherwise I will denounce you both to the authorities.

(At home, the mother is punishing Jang with a rod.)

Jang (Sitting.): Mom, are you an ex-convict? Or are you from Shilla? Otherwise¡¦ why are we moving so much? Whenever we start settling down, we move. Whenever I made a few friends, we move. Then we get victimized by bandits because of our false identity plaques¡¦ Are you a murderer like they¡¯re telling me you are?

Yun: No, Jang! No!

Jang: Then? Was my father a murderer, a fugitive?

Yun: How dare you say that!

Jang: Then what is it? You never tell me anything about my father, and you just tell me this non-sense that I¡¯m the son of the dragon, and we keep on moving!

The children run away while the townspeople complain that those kids are troublemakers.

Kid1: How did you make an explosion?

Jang: Remember something exploded in the kitchen of your house? There was bean powder on the floor, and when it touched the fire, it exploded. I think that happens when the powder¡¯s in the air¡¦

Yungamo is arrested together with the bandits, Jang & his friends. Yungamo kneels down to the officers, saying that everything is her fault, for failing to teach her son properly. So she is been given 50 lashes, making sure Jang watches¡¦

AT THEIR HOUSE

Jang: These officers don¡¯t have mothers. How can they hit in the same spot! (Putting some herbs in his mother's wounds.) You can¡¯t say anything to the authorities about the bandits, can you? And you don¡¯t tell me why you made the false IDs. You smile while being hit¡¦ Don¡¯t you have any feelings? So mom¡¦ let¡¯s go to Chunchooku! They have great things in there. And I can study with Buddhist. They say that everyone¡¯s treated equally there.

Yun: You don¡¯t do the homework I give you. You think you¡¯ll study with Buddhist?

Jang: I should become Buddha. Then, I wouldn¡¯t have to study; others would study me instead.

Yun: Jang¡¦

Jang: What? We¡¯ll move again?

Yun: No, this time, you move. I¡¯ll stay. Although I did this to protect you, if we keep on moving like this, we¡¯ll be abused again by those types of thugs, and I know how terrible that must be for you, and how damaging to your pride. I was wrong, I don¡¯t think I can raise you up properly on my own.

But Jang¡¦ You must be brought up properly. You have to become a great man. Go to Taehaksa (School of Science).

Jang: School of Science?

Yun: It¡¯s in Savisong. That¡¯s where all the army weapons and all the Court supplies are made. They teach you how to play instruments and how to dance.

Jang: You learnt to dance there?

Yun: Yes¡¦ I too grew up being punished with rods, while learning to dance.

Jang: They punish you with rods there?

Yun: But there¡¯s more than that. Whenever my lips dried for dancing too long, there was a good person that would put ointment on my lips. We would dance during National Holidays.

Jang: But¡¦ I don¡¯t want to learn to dance.

Yun: I danced. But you can do other things. It¡¯s only because you¡¯re with peddlers you get in trouble for making dragon fires and small powdered explosives. When you go there, these are all commendable things. People will praise you for them. (Really?) Of course¡¦ That man will surely praise you for these. That man will raise you up properly. (She hugs Jang.)

In front of the School of Science:

Yungamo gives a letter for Jang to give to Mokrasu. She tells him Mokrasu is a great man so he should listen to him and earn his respect. Her only wish is for Jang to earn the respect of Mokrasu.

Jang: He¡¯s my father, right?

Yun: What?

Jang: He¡¯s my father, isn¡¯t he?

Yun: No, I¡¯m telling you he¡¯s not...

Jang: Then why do you cry every time you mention him? He¡¯s my father, right?

Yun: Go now, someone will be coming for you. So follow him.

Jang: I¡¯m asking you if he¡¯s my father!

Yun: You¡¯ll be able to come home twice a year so don¡¯t think of me, OK? Just listen to Master Mokrasu. (She leaves)

Jang: I learnt a little from mother¡¦

Yun: Go tell your mother that the School of Science is not a place where anyone can just walk in like that. This is a place to develop the arts and the culture of Baekjae. So anyone here must have special talents and show potentials. And on top of those talents, he must have character and discipline. But I see no potentials in you, and knowing your mother, I see neither discipline nor character. That¡¯s why there¡¯s no way I can take you in here.

(To his assistant.) Have I ever shown any favoritism towards people I know? If you want to do that, get out of this school! And expel this child. RIGHT NOW!!!

Jang keeps telling them there is something he needs to find out¡¦ but he is expelled from there, and he is not allowed to go in anymore.

The king declares that soon there will be a New Crown Prince Ceremony, where his younger brother will become his successor.

Inside a room, Mokrasu is thinking about the letter. Yungamo¡¯s voice: ¡°It¡¯s been more than 10 years already since I¡¯ve left you without explaining myself to you. And once again, I come to you without any explanation, asking you what I should not ask. Please take charge of this boy. Let him grow up well in the School of Science. If you still have any feelings left from our past, any regrets¡¦ please listen to my request. There are things I cannot explain, things I shouldn¡¯t speak about, that are even worse than the bow I had to break to you and to myself. Please know this¡¦¡±

Mokrasu is lighting up the ¡®burner,¡¯ thinking¡¦ (¡¦ the one born out of the mistake will light up the incense, and the one who lights up this incense will become the king. The king will establish Baekjae again, and receive great honor and praise!)

People are urging Mokrasu to stop the New Crown Prince Ceremony somehow. The prince¡¯s body was not found yet, and if the king¡¯s brother becomes king, there will be lots of bloodshed.

Mokrasu: We scientist are not politicians. We¡¯re not supposed to be moved by the power struggles. We must just think of Baekjae as a whole.

General Sun: Are you sure the Aja's dead?

Heukjipyung (Sun's Bodyguard): Yes.

Sun: Then how come his body¡¯s not found? If he happens to be alive¡¦ what¡¯s the point of my father going through that ceremony? Even if he¡¯s not alive, if the rumors persist that he¡¯s alive somewhere, that¡¯ll be damaging¡¦ Besides, Wangoo thinks the prince is still alive. We must find the courier that went looking for the prince. If the prince¡¯s alive, we must kill him. And kill all the messengers.

There are lots of search going on, very meticulous. Jang hides himself inside a cart that is entering the Palace. An injured man is hiding inside also. The soldiers are intending to search the cart but the driver runs away. Soldiers follow the cart, killing the driver. The cart falls down a hill.

Jang is trying to help the injured man who was hiding inside. He gives Jang a letter, telling him to give it to the king's guard, a message from the crown prince. ¡°If you do this, he¡¯ll do anything you ask.¡± He dies.

Jang asks a boy in the street if he can read. (Yes) He beats up the boy, and forces him to go to Wangoo, saying: ¡°I have a very important letter for you given to me by a dying man. Come behind the forest to meet me tonight. Don¡¯t think of arresting me. If you do, you won¡¯t be able to read the letter.¡±

Wangoo asks the boy more questions but the boy keeps repeating the above lines.

One of the soldiers informs Heukjipyung about this boy and his message.
¡°Does this mean that the prince is alive?¡±

Behind the city walls, Wangoo Moojang meets Jang.

Wangoo: ¡°Who sent you?¡±

Jang: No one. I did.

Wangoo: How can you dare play like this?

Jang: I¡¯m not playing. I think you know this, that¡¯s why you came. You must know something, don¡¯t you? I hid inside a cart in order to enter the Palace. But there was someone else inside. The guards followed the cart and the man inside died. But before dying, he gave me a letter saying that it's from the crown prince.

Wangoo: Then the crown prince¡¯s alive! Give me that letter!

Jang: Not yet. The messenger told me you¡¯d do anything I ask if I give this letter to you.

Soldier: Are you trying to bargain with the King¡¯s Guard? Do you want us to take all you have by force? Give that letter right now!

Jang: Alright, you may take away all I have but you won¡¯t have the letter. The man said the letter's valuable so do as I ask!

Wangoo: OK, what do you want?

Jang: You know Master Mokrasu the scientist? (yes¡¦) Make him kneel down before me. (Really? Why?) This is between one man to another, so don¡¯t ask any more questions.

Wangoo: (Amused.) One man to another? OK, I can bring Mokrasu to you, but I can¡¯t make him kneel down to you. You do that. (OK.) Now, give me that letter.

Jang: Bring Mokrasu to me first.

Wangoo: I¡¯m a man too. You must believe my words.

Jang: I can¡¯t believe you.

Wangoo: (To soldier.) Bring Mokrasu to us! Hurry!

Jang was going to give him the letter but an arrow is shot. Spies were behind, and the 2 boys run away.

Wangoo tells Mokrasu that a boy of around 10 years of age was looking for him. ¡°I¡¯m pretty sure he¡¯ll come looking for you. That boy¡¦ he has the crown prince¡¯s letter.¡±

Mok: The prince¡¯s alive?

Wangoo: The messenger was killed by the opposition. And if he comes to you, get that letter from the boy!

General Sun is informed of the situation too. Heukjipyung promises Sun that he'll find the boy before the others.

Mokrasu (To his assistant.): Have you seen that boy after the other day? (No.) Do you know where Yungamo lives. (No.)

Assistant 2: Master, something awful has happened!! (All the waters from the well and the jars, everywhere is full of dust. And all the burning coals were off.)

People are talking of how awful this is, since they should prepare for tomorrow¡¯s crowning of the new prince. ¡°Shilla men should have done this!¡± ¡°But how could they do this to every single jar and bowl¡¦¡± ¡°Could this mean this was done by the gods?¡±

Mok: Stop speaking non-sense! Find out who did this! Wash all the plates & light up all the burning coals again!¡±

Mok tells his assistants to keep this quiet. ¡°Tell everyone not to talk about this elsewhere! Send me 10 people to investigate this.¡±

They call Mokrasu again, telling him that all the metal bowls looked burnt. ¡°Who on earth did this?¡±

Man: ¡°They¡¯re saying this is happening everywhere. All the metal plates are burnt and all the earth bowls are broke.

Mokrasu: The five elements, five elements! (metal, wood, water, fire, and earth). Then, 2 things are still left¡¦ (They look for the 2 signs left.)

Mokrasu finds a boy hammering wood sticks in the sand. The boy tells him he is just following instructions. ¡°Did you do everything else also?¡±

Boy: No, the boy named Jang beat me up, and told me to stick these in here!

Mok: Where is he?

Boy: He said you¡¯d know!

Mokrasu goes near the trees and he steps on Jang¡¯s trap.

Jang: I may not have skills to work with metal, nor talents or potential, but I know the five elements. What do you think? Don¡¯t you think I¡¯m qualified to be in the Science School?

Mok: I see you have skills now. Skills to do vandalism. If I¡¯ve hurt you with my words before, I apologize. Now, let me down and give me the letter you carry. That letter¡¯s a lot more important than you think. The country¡¯s future¡¯s at stake.
